Polystyrene (PS) is an aromatic polymer that is widely used in the chemical industry. It is derived from the aromatic monomer styrene, which is produced commercially from petroleum. PS is a thermoplastic substance that is solid at room temperature but can flow when heated above its glass transition temperature. Once cooled, it solidifies again. Pure solid PS is a colorless and hard plastic with limited flexibility, and it can be molded into intricate shapes. PS can be transparent or colored, depending on the manufacturing process. Its chemical composition consists of a long chain hydrocarbon with every other carbon connected to a phenyl group.
