Claribaccin is a pharmaceutical product that contains the active ingredient clarithromycin, a semisynthetic macrolide antibiotic. Clarithromycin is derived from erythromycin by substituting the CN3O hydroxyl group with an (OH) group in the 6th position of the lactone ring. This modification results in the formation of 6-Omethylerythromycin A, which is responsible for the antibacterial properties of clarithromycin.

The mechanism of action of clarithromycin involves its binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria. By doing so, it inhibits the translocation of activated amino acids, which is essential for intracellular protein synthesis in these microorganisms. This leads to the inhibition of protein synthesis in the bacteria, ultimately exerting its antibacterial effect.
